Lindisfarne Gospels 2013

The Lindisfarne Gospels is one of the most important books in the world and one of our greatest treasures.

Returning to the North East this summer 2013 The Lindisfarne Gospels was the focus of a North East celebration of the region's creative, artistic and spiritual heritage.

Members of the NE Region of the Embroiderers' Guild were privileged to be invited to play a significant part in this festival through our own exhibition inspired by this work of art.

Embroideries by members of the NE Region were on show in the Galilee Chapel of Durham Cathedral from 27th May - 23rd June 2013, prior to the arrival of the Gospels in Durham.

Embroidery by our members, inspired by this masterpiece of Anglo-Saxon art, were a significant part of the buildup to the arrival of the Gospels and the celebrations in Durham and across North East England.

Following their time in the Cathedral the exhibits were returned to the branches for some smaller exhibitions and then they came together again to be shown in Hexham in September and October. There will be another chance to see this impressive exhibition in Ripon from 28th July - 24th August 2014.
